Janet Smith-Haltom: Passion, Mentors Key for Career Growth

A self-described tomboy growing up, Janet Smith-Haltom was never deterred by the male-dominated world of architecture. Smith-Haltom was the first female principal at Hnedak Bobo Group and still remembers the advice that Greg Hnedak, one of the firm’s founding members, gave her at the start of her career with the company. “He said, ‘Janet, I don’t want you to be a great female architect, I want you to be a great architect.’ That’s the way I have been proceeding since,” Smith-Haltom says.

HBG’s “Coastal Modern” Design Creates a Unique Experience at The Point Casino Hotel

You’ll sit in the outdoor gathering area and you’ll notice that the stained concrete floor will have a design resembling a Coast Salish spindle whorl. You’ll enjoy some quiet time or, perhaps, a salmon or clambake. Maybe you’ll go on a walk among the tall cedars and firs that share the adjacent  forest with 12-foot totem poles.

Hot Springs, Ark., is a lakefront resort town with a long and infamous history in the world of gaming. Once a haven for the rich and famous, the secluded town, located just southwest of Little Rock, became known as The Spa City—America’s First Resort, due to the area’s natural thermal spring waters long thought to have powers to soothe and heal. Hot Springs was also popular with notorious gangsters, such as Al Capone and Lucky Luciano, and equally notorious illegal gambling activity. Hot Springs historians boast that “the town offered Las Vegas-style amenities before there was a Las Vegas.”

HBG Excited about Redevelopment in Memphis

Local architecture firms note it isn’t about the scale of the project, but the number of projects coming across the table since the economy has increased following the 2008 financial crisis.

Across the board, firms are seeing more multifamily projects — an indicator of the health of multifamily and residential real estate. As home values depreciated, more people opted to rent rather than buy, says Joey Hagan, Architecture Inc. principal, resulting in the burgeoning apartment market.

Kirk Bobo, Hnedak Bobo Group Inc. managing principal, says multifamily is a great use for the redevelopment work taking place in neighborhoods across the city as it creates density and helps the tax base.
