Past, present and future of sustainable building with Hnedak Bobo

From the Memphis Business Journal – read the full article here

In 1979, architects predicted the oil embargo of 1973 and ensuing energy crisis would be the “greatest molder of architectural style since the pyramids.” When energy became affordable again in the 1980s, people lost focus on the groundbreaking energy-saving design work that was just gaining traction.

Now, with current interest in climate change and sustainability, those architectural ideals have come full circle.

“SustainDeidre_1ability has just become part and parcel of how we do business,” says Deidre Brady, an interior designer with Hnedak Bobo Group Inc. Like the Memphis Business Journal, the architecture firm began in 1979.

HBG Sponsors Local “Green Apple Day of Service” Event

Hnedak Bobo Group teamed up with the Memphis Chapter of U.S. Green Building Council and several other local companies to host the Green Apple Day of Service’s “Paper Power!” competition this past Saturday, Sept. 27. Participating Memphis area students created innovative structures made only from recycled paper products, and the results were nothing short of amazing! We had so much fun seeing the unique interpretations of the recycling message “Recycle or DIE!”. HBG is a proud sponsor of The Green Apple Day of Service, which gives parents, teachers, students, companies and local organizations the opportunity to transform all schools into healthy, safe and productive learning environments through local service projects. We can’t wait until next year’s event.

Intern Insights: Katie – “What’s so refreshing about HBG is how appreciative everyone is of the work we create.”

interns-katiecostaFor starters, I would like to thank everyone at HBG for such a wonderful summer. Everyone was so incredibly welcoming and really made Memphis feel like home! Coming from the University of Cincinnati, where our program alternates between semesters of school and work, I definitely had some experience in moving to new places. I did not, however, have any prior knowledge of the geography that lies below the Mason-Dixon line.

I stuffed my car with all of my belongings (plus Riya’s, who also interned at HBG this summer!) and made the twelve-hour drive. If the south is one big, hospitable family, Memphis is your cool older cousin. While turning twenty-one this summer probably (read: absolutely) contributed to my embracing of everything Memphis, I found myself falling more and more in love with this city’s fun attitude; an attitude you would expect from large cities but on a much smaller, more manageable scale.
